Q&A: Sculpting in Second Life?

Question by Gustavo Teles: Sculpting in Second Life?
I had to model some objects with 3DMax or whatever.
I couldnt do it, as I dont know how to manage modeling tools.
So, somebody did it for me, but I dont know how to do it. I searched in thousand websites (http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Sculpted_Prims:_Creator’s_Guide, http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Sculpted_Prims:_FAQ, http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Sculpted_Prims:_Importing and others), in order to import to Second Life the “sculpted maps” that I had on my hands.
Seems that the guy that modeled the stuffs mixed up the modeling tools and maybe forgot some precious files, necessary for texture and stuffs.

He modeled parts of a computer.
So, for example, in the folder of a PC CASE, there’s the file case.hpa and tons of png with some kind of RGB textures that seems too random. So, it doesnt look like a PC case, anyways.
What I tried to do is just… go to Second Life, upload all of these pngs, create a new object, change its form to sculpted and put it (or try) all the textures uploaded.
It didnt work… and I dont know why. I followed all the steps (not so many), that would say if I upload the sculpted maps, it would look like the thing I modeled.

Another one, called h55, has a uvw file, a psd file (photoshop) and some 4 real iamges (not rgb textures).
I couldnt find any help to upload it correctly and make it work.

So, the objective of this question is to know how to import to Second Life the things that I have and make it “work” (meaning: the object become like how it was modeled in 3DMax or Photoshop).

The coloured bitmap is correct and it will work if you put it in the correct place.

Once you have the bitmap uploaded to your inventory, click the Build button and rez a cube on the ground. Click the “Object” tab. There is a dropdown box here where you select what type of prim it is – cube, sphere, cylinder etc. Bottom of the list is Sculpted. Choose that.

Your prim will change to a sphere (the default shape) and a texture panel will appear with a similar coloured bitmap in it. This is the bitmap for that default sphere.

Now open your inventory, find the rgb bitmap that you uploaded, and drag it into that coloured square, thus replacing the default texture with your new one. Your prim will now change into what was modelled in the 3d program. If it looks wrong at this stage, it’s because the person who did the modelling doesn’t know what he’s doing.

With the other set, it sounds like these are the actual coloured textures to apply colour to the object. There should be some png or tga files: if there aren’t, you can convert the psd’s to either of these two formats (but keep the psd’s in case you want to make alterations later). Once you have the tga or png files, upload those as well. Then go to the Texture tab of the object you’re building, and drag one of those files to the Texture panel there. If they’ve been done correctly, they should have all the shading in the correct place to match the shape of the sculpt. Only one is needed: if you have several different ones they’re just colour options.

Question by battgirl: What do you thing is HH Sheikh Mohammad’s motto in life?
I saw the first part of the TV Special on him last night on Dubai One. I am in awe with the inspiration he spreads to the people around him. I am amazed at how he was able to “put Dubai in the world map”.

What could be his inspiration?

Miss Goldman: What now, Grampa?!

Dr. Kelso: You are going to shut your damn yapper and listen for a change, because I got you pegged, sweetheart. You want to take the easy way out with the surgery because you’re scared. You’re scared because if you try and fail, there’s only you to blame. Well, Missy, let me break this down for you, Bobbo-style. Life is scary. Get used to it.

J.D.’s Narration: And then it seemed like Dr. Kelso wasn’t only talking to her.

Dr. Kelso: There are no magical fixes. It’s all up to you. So get up off your keister, get out of here, and go start doin’ the work.

**[Howie Day’s “Collide” beings]**

Miss Goldman: What if it’s too hard?

Turk: [leaning down to face Dr. Kelso next to Miss Goldman] Yeah, what if it’s too hard?

Dr. Kelso: Turkleton, I have no idea why you’re chiming in, but I’ll say this to both of you. Nothing in this world that’s worth having comes easy.

Ever use baseball as a “map” for dealing with things in life?

Question by Mmm Apple Pie…: Ever use baseball as a “map” for dealing with things in life?
You know, when you feel in a “slump” and things have gone badly, you tell yourself to get back to the “fundamentals” and have an optimistic view and do things how you were taught correctly. That’s just one example.

I mean, I think if you listen to coaches and players talk about how they deal with winning and losing, it’s good ways to deal with life. You don’t get too high or too low. When you win, you say you enjoy it and move on. When you lose, you tip your hat to the other team, then you find out why you lost and the losses are often more educating and helpful to improvement than the wins are…

Thoughts? Opinions? Anecdotes?
The popular Washington columnist, George Will, has said this before in baseball columns. I disagree with him overall on politics but I respect him and always have. He’s a true fan of the game and has interesting insights. I recommend people reading his books…I’m going to.
LOL Fozzy, I also grew up mainly in the central Illinois area and it is almost an exact science: Above Peoria – more Cubs fans, South of Peoria – more Cards.

The rivalry is so unique in that the fans GENERALLY get along very well. My best friend is a Cubs fan.
