How often should I renew my children’s passport?

Question by Jen: How often should I renew my children’s passport?
My son’s first passport was when he was less than a year old. We’re planning on traveling internationally again when he will be three and obviously, he looks a lot different than the passport photo. Do I need to renew his passport to update the photo? Is there any regulation that says I need to renew a child’s passport every “x” years?

No, there is not. You may use the passport as long as it is valid. Some countries however have special short periods of passport validation for newborns. In Norway or Spain for example passports issued to minors below 5 years are only valid for two years. The United States do not have special provisions, the passport can be used until its expiration date [5 years] unless the entry procedures of the visited country require at least a six months further validation..

Q&A: Is it true those online travel agent things like the one with the Gnome and Capt. Kirk, etc often scam people?

Question by JH: Is it true those online travel agent things like the one with the Gnome and Capt. Kirk, etc often scam people?
People tell me if you book a hotel, for example , and they save you 40 dollars over the course of your stay, they will “make up” for this 40 dollars by increasing your hotel fees, in a very sneaky and hateful way.
Someone i know stayed in a hotel for a few days and so did their friend. The person who used the “discount” service paid a lower nightly rate than his friend, but they paid higher “fees”, so he actually paid the exact same amount as his friend.

Is this a scam?
what do you mean “Buyer Beware”???? They tack on these fees to your quoted price, after you check out of your hotel. They are stealing from you !!!

No. Buyer beware. Those sites don’t actually guarantee the best price, simply ‘good’ prices. It’s up to you to determine whether the price is better than another.

A smart buyer will check the entire cost of the stay and make his decision based on that. The fees are stated upfront, there is nothing sneaky or ‘hateful’ about it. I will admit you have to work through the process before you’ll see the total price sometimes, but it’s always listed before you pay or book.
